LET IT BE FOR LINDA

LIVE AT THE BRIT AWARDS 2008 Macca's moving tribute to late wife

Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney had the last laugh on money-grabbing Heather Mills in his Brits performance last night - by erasing her from his life.

Sir Paul dedicated his Outstanding Contribution finale to his late wife and love of his life, Linda. But he completely ignored Mills in a video montage of his life. The cheeky ex had been begging to come to the ceremony but Brits bosses were warned to keep her away.

While he performed, Sir Paul ran a tribute video behind him with nine shots of Linda as he played Live And Let Die.

He also played tribute to his late father James, and former bandmate John Lennon - whose son Sean was in the audience.

The 65-year-old Scouser told us: "Live And Let Die is the song that reminds me of Linda. Hey Jude reminds me of John."

And Sir Paul told us that despite winning thousands of awards in his time, this one means a huge amount to him.

He said: "It's human instinct to feel good when we get an award because it's validation. When people like what you're doing - it's a big deal. It's wonderful to get an award. It could go to anyone but I'm getting it and I'm chuffed."

But Sir Paul's gong will not find its final resting place in a special trophy room. McCartney said: "I couldn't have my mates round and say, 'Here's my trophy room.' I'd be a bit embarrassed!"

McCartney also said reports of his early demise after his heart attack last year were greatly exaggerated. He told us: "I had a minor thing about nine months ago but it was all over the news. My friends were texting, 'Are you OK? And when I took my baby to school, all the mums were concerned.

"In the meantime. I'm fine. I'm better than ever. I'm enjoying life."

So put that in your pipe, Heather...
